West London-based Entec Sound and Light recently renewed its 17 year-long working relationship as technical production supplier to the Bootleg Beatles on their latest UK tour, supplying lighting and audio equipment, plus crew.
Regarded by many as one of the definitive Beatles tribute acts, having formed back in 1980, the band performs worldwide, the show including a full span of favourite tracks, complete with costume changes to match the Fab Four’s different eras. To deal efficiently with the different venues, both lighting and sound designs needed to be adaptable, this factor being the key starting point for lighting designer Mark Jones and front of house engineer Marc Langley.
Looking after the sound element for Entec was systems technician Chunk Charters, now in his fourth year of working for the Bootleg Beatles. The sound system employed on the tour is a d&b Q Series line array, which is flown or ground stacked in multiple configurations depending on the place and space, the show being mixed by Langley using a Yamaha PM5D-RH. Monitor engineer Simon Lutkin uses a Yamaha M7 CL console, and in keeping with the period feel of the performance, they are all on wedges and wired microphones, utilising eight d&b M2 wedges, plus eight E3s for the orchestra and brass fills. There is a full complement of mics, with a heavy emphasis on Shure SM57s and 58s.
Many of the instruments and back line elements also date back to the Beatles heyday of the 1960s.
