Assembly Aurora Nova, Edinburgh
Since the terrorist attacks on September 11, David Rees’ satirical internet comic strip has provided a leftish commentary on the Bush administration’s War on Terror.
Using a series of expertly synchronised overhead projectors, Texan troupe Rude Mechs recreates the spirit of the strip, made up of a recurring set of clip art office worker pictures, narrating the speech bubbles and miming the scenes.
The ensemble cast picks up on the almost oxymoronic gung-ho ambivalence of Rees’ America. “Let’s bomb the shit out of the bastards, as long as it doesn’t affect my lifestyle… what did they do anyways?” seems to be the viewpoint of those living in Get Your War On’s America.
It is a simple concept and one that works because of the power of Rees’ writing and the clever utilisation of all the elements of his work. Quite why it is classified under dance and physical theatre in the programme is not clear and could alienate a large number of potential audience members.
Rude Mechs paints a frightening picture of a dumb nation with its finger on the global destruction button. But it does it with a satirical smile. This is a show that everyone should be talking about.
Production information can change over the run of the show.
