Baby Belly
This murder mystery show sees a fringe comedian perform and die each night in Club Sandwich, shot mid-act by one of four suspects. The crime triggers a lively, hammy and clammy tour through the venue’s moist caverns to find the culprit.
A gin-soaked former showgirl, a rhinestone-wearing singer, an old janitor and a police detective all have a vested interest in dispatching corrupt nightclub owner Brad Sandwich. With plenty of audience interaction, including the chance to interrogate the suspects, the show is performed with high spirits and tongue in cheek energy.
It’s a kind of camp Cluedo with casino chic. Leisa Rea’s Venetia Blind slurs and slinks around the stage, while Paul Lichfield and Christian Reilly play their parts with unashamed gusto. Sequins and all things tacky abound. The venue adds to the seediness and faux-noirish feel, with a key role in the story for Venetia’s eye patch.
Directed and produced by Suzanne Radford, there are probably too many in-jokes and caricatures for some people’s taste. But it’s also curiously fun to watch a show with no arty pretensions or deep subtexts, just sheer bravura and an awful lot of glitter.
