12) I'd like to be a 'redcoat' - how do I go about it?
A job as a 'redcoat' (so called because of the jackets Butlin's entertainment team members traditionally wore) is an acknowledged route into the industry - many famous names have started out that way.
It's very hard work, you'll need to have lots of physical and mental stamina and superb communication and social skills as you'll be regarded as the public face of the holiday company which hires you to keep its guests happy.
You might be compering or choreographing a show, dancing and/or singing in it, devising competitions for children, bingo-calling, organising outdoor and indoor games etc etc.
Most of the tour operators are looking for staff of this type to work in the UK and abroad and advertise in The Stage regularly, particularly early in the year when they are recruiting for the many summer jobs available. It's great fun, excellent experience, but not for anyone with a five day week mentality.
The employers require you to be at least 18 years of age before you can become a coat entertainer in most cases.
The large companies who employ 'coats' or coat style entertainers in the UK are Butlins, Haven and Pontins although there are a number of other parks and holiday centres around the country who use coat style entertainers. Recruitment advertisements usually appear in The Stage around January for summer employment.
