Frequently Asked Questions

9) I'm going for an audition but I need advice on what piece to do, and some background information on what to expect when I get there.

There are many books available.

Try 'An Actor's Guide to Auditions and Interviews' by Margo Annett.

Many audition pieces are seen far too frequently and the auditioners often recommend that you find an alternative to the most popular pieces. Some books list which speeches have been 'done to death' and which to avoid. Try Simon Dunmore's books such as An Actor's Guide to Getting Work and his 'Alternative Shakespeare Auditions' series (all published by A&C Black).

Alternatively, go to specialist theatre bookshop Samuel French, 52 Fitzroy St, London W1 (mail order available, too).

Or go to Dance Books or Amazon and search for titles under 'audition'.

UK Performing Arts have a number of articles which may provide you with more information on audition processes.

Also, read The Stage's 'How To Pass Auditions' guide on this site.
