Upon hearing the news that Simon Callow is to appear in yet another one-man show later this year, Tabard’s initial reaction was one of mild interest.
Following his roles in The Mystery of Charles Dickens and Being Shakespeare, another solo performance from Callow was not exactly a radical departure from previous work. On learning of the production’s title, however, one’s enthusiasm began to grow.
The show, called Inside Wagner’s Head, conjured up a whole host of disturbing imagery and theatrical possibilities for Tabard. What’s this? Callow is to write and perform a piece about the former X Factor contestant who dressed like a pirate and sang Ricky Martin hits such as Livin’ La Vida Loca and She Bangs?
But alas, Tabard was mistaken. Callow is in fact taking to the stage at the Royal Opera House’s Linbury Studio Theatre this September in a show about the German composer Richard Wagner. This Wagner remains rather controversial. Not quite the Ricky Martin sing-along Tabard was expecting then.
