God bless that lovely Idina Menzel. The singer is in London this week with her one-woman show, and by all accounts it’s been going down a storm.
But it seems things didn’t get off to a particularly good start. Tabard hears the Broadway star turned up for her first rehearsal at the Apollo Theatre here in the West End, only to find she couldn’t get into the venue. The singer tweeted about it afterwards, stating: “Tried getting into rehearsal at the Apollo. My face everywhere outside but no one would let me in. Humbling. Very humbling.”
Come now, Idina, stop being such a drama queen. Why didn’t you just try the stage door like everyone else? You clearly only went round the front so you could wave at a giant version of yourself plastered onto a massive billboard.
Still, Tabard assumes she made it in eventually, and that rehearsals went well, as the reviews have been rather kind. Though Tabard understands Idina had a bit of a memory lapse during one of her gigs, just before singing Take Me or Leave Me from Rent. She introduced it as a number originally sang by “two black lesbians”, only to recall that couldn’t be true, as she had been one of the song’s original performers. She promptly changed her description to “one black lesbian and a hot Jewish girl”.
Either way, Tabard is sure some men out there would have been getting a little hot under the collar at the mere thought of it.
