Musical theatre training – listings

placeholder-2-60
by -

The following represents a selection of the musical theatre courses available. A brief explanation first – until November last year there were two organisations providing forms of accreditation or approval. The Conference of Drama Schools was a 22-strong member organisation that includes many (but not all) of the best-known drama schools.

The National Council for Drama Training was the body that provides accreditation for individual courses, the vast majority of which were taught at CDS schools. However, it is important to note that a large proportion of CDS courses and almost all others taught elsewhere are not accredited, yet there are many respected programmes among them.

In late 2012, CDS and NCDT merged to form a new organisation – Theatre UK. It has taken over accreditation but no longer accredits one-year courses (some of which previously had NCDT accreditation). Take the time to search for details on its site at www.dramauk.co.uk/courses.

As the system is still in its early days, we have listed those schools which formerly had CDS affiliation and and those courses with previous NCDT accreditation for background information.

The Council for Dance Education and Training accredits and represents dance schools.

Schools and courses for children interested in musical theatre:

Parents should think hard before deciding whether their child is ready for full-time arts training or whether part-time/summer school courses, etc, are a better place to start. The schools mentioned below are highly professional and will insist on youngsters maintaining academic standards. In many cases, it may be better to wait for an opportunity to seek out a mainstream school specialising in performance or a specific performing arts course that accepts applicants from the age of 16.

These performance-based schools don’t necessarily specialise in musical theatre, but the genre often features prominently in the training offered.

  1. Although the focus of Henry Bird’s article is Musical Theatre training I would like to query how serious Drama UK is taking it’s claims of providing information.
    Administrators of accredited courses are asked to provide answers to highly relevant questions;
1)How many pupils enrolled on the course (i.e at the beginning of the academic year; September)
2)How many pupils in each class
    3) How many contact hours with a tutor
    each week
4)No of public performances a student will appear during final year.
Why are these answers not provided?
Neither Guildford or Mountview mentioned in Harry’s article give them.
In the Acting section no less that 8 accredited courses bother to give their commitment; Guildford/Bristol Old Vic(2)/LAMDA/Royal Welsh/RADA/ Royal Scottish/Oxford.
Why not? What have they to hide
At £9,000 per year for what is normally
a three year course is a tremendous
financial commitment. Prospective students have an enormous decision to make. At £30 – $60 for audition fees.
I have asked Hilary Hadley & Malcolm Sinclair who represent Equity on two boards of Drama UK to press for
Why are the administrators holding back. The response from Drama UK
“we HAVE asked them to respond”!!!
I have asked Hilary Hadley & Malcolm Sinclair who represent Equity on the
two boards of Drama UK to press for
definite answers to simple questions which I cant see why they are being evaded
I just hope that Drama UK is NOT going to be a quango
To be registered as accredited I understand it cost £4260 other courses have a charge too.

  2. An fascinating discussion is worth comment. I think that it’s best to write extra on this subject, it might not be a taboo topic but typically people are not sufficient to talk on such topics. To the next. Cheers Ajax Roofing Contractors, 15-75 Bayly St. W., #323, Ajax, Ontario, L1S 7L7, Canada, 289-275-1500
