John Lithgow to star in NT’s The Magistrate

John Lithgow is set to play the title role in The Magistrate, written by Arthur Wing Pinero, as part of the National Theatre’s full autumn and winter season.

Directed by Timothy Sheader, the show will run at the Olivier Theatre from November 14, with press night on November 21, and will also star Nancy Caroll and Joshua McGuire. It replaces a planned staging of The Count of Monte Cristo, which was postponed indefinitely in June this year. It was also due to be directed by Sheader.

The Magistrate is designed by Katrina Lindsay, with lighting by James Farncombe and sound by Paul Arditti.

As part of the National Theatre Live programme, it will be broadcast to cinemas worldwide on January 17, 2013.

Other production details confirmed include Port, a play written by Simon Stephens, which will be directed by Marianne Elliott and will run from January 22, with press night on January 28 in the Lyttelton Theatre.

Lizzie Clachan is the designer, with lighting by Neil Austen and sound by Ian Dickinson.

Katie Mitchell will direct Hansel and Gretel, a children’s adaptation written by Lucy Kirkwood and devised by both Mitchell and Kirkwood.

It will run from December 7, with press night on December 13, in the Cottesloe Theatre. The show features production design from Vicki Mortimer, lighting by Jon Clark, music by Paul Clark, movement direction from Joseph Alford, sound by Gareth Fry, and puppet design from Toby Olie.

Alan Bennett’s new play People, which is directed by Nicholas Hytner, will premiere at the Lyttelton Theatre on October 31, with press night on November 7.

It stars Frances de la Tour, Selina Cadell and Linda Bassett. Bob Crawley is the designer, with lighting by James Farncombe and sound by Rich Walsh.

Meanwhile, The Animals and Children Took to the Streets from theatre company 1927, will return to the National from December 12 to January 10, 2013 at the Lyttelton Theatre.

As previously announced, Lucy Prebble’s new play The Effect, which stars Billie Piper and is directed by Rupert Goold, will run from November 6 at the Cottesloe Theatre.
