Keeping Up Appearances actor Geoffrey Hughes dies at the age of 68

Television actor Geoffrey Hughes, known for his work on Keeping Up Appearances and Coronation Street, has died of prostate cancer at the age of 68.

In Coronation Street, he played Eddie Yeats, a dustman with a criminal past.

A spokesman for the show paid tribute to him for creating “a legendary and iconic character”.

Hughes stopped being a Corrie regular in 1983, but made a brief final appearance as Yeats in 1987.

Between 1990 and 1995, Hughes played the work-shy Onslow, the brother-in-law of Patricia Routledge’s social climber, Hyacinth Bucket, in Keeping Up Appearances.

In 1998 he was cast as Twiggy, a former convict, in The Royle Family.

Towards the end of his life, Hughes moved to the Isle of Wight, where, two years ago, he was appointed deputy Lord Lieutenant. A full obituary will appear in the print edition of The Stage.
