Hull Truck Theatre to launch RSC partnership as part of 40th anniversary

Hull Truck Theatre will begin its 40th anniversary autumn season with the launch of an educational partnership alongside the Royal Shakespeare Company.

A total of eight primary and secondary schools in Hull will take part in workshops and performances as part of the RSC’s Learning and Performance Network program.

The three-year scheme, which the RSC has been running since 2006 in other regions, is aimed at schools that have little access to Shakespeare. It will involve one hub school working closely with the RSC and Hull Truck Theatre and then passing on their training to the eight other schools.

Teachers will also be able to gain professional qualifications through the RSC and the University of Warwick.

Andrew Smaje, chief executive of Hull Truck Theatre, said: “The scheme is about young people but it’s also about teachers gaining specific qualifications and being confident in teaching their subject.

“When the RSC moves on after the three years, within a city like Hull where schools aren’t performing well in league tables and there is a lack of aspiration connected with the value of education, its work will leave a legacy of teaching and learning Shakespeare.”

A 70-minute adaptation of King Lear by the RSC will be performed from October 4–6 at the Hull Truck Theatre to begin the educational scheme.

The Yorkshire-based theatre has announced that its autumn programme will also include The Kichen Sink by playwright Tom Wells in a new production directed by Tessa Walker from November 2-17.

Community play City of Light runs from August 24–September 8 and will feature the largest cast ever seen on stage at the Hull Truck Theatre while an adaptation of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz will play from December 7–13.
