Sam Pritchard wins 15th JMK Young Director Award

Sam Pritchard has been awarded the 2012 James Menzies-Kitchin Young Director Award.

Pritchard will receive a bursary of £18,000 towards a production of Fireface by Marius von Mayenberg, which he will stage at the Young Vic’s Clare Theatre in October. He was chosen from a shortlist of eight finalists, with Simon Pollard named as runner-up with his proposal for a production of Hedwig and the Angry Inch by John Cameron Mitchell. Pollard will receive a £2,000 award, funded by the Ian Ritchie Foundation.

Fireface was originally staged in 1998 in Germany, and first seen by British audiences at the Royal Court as part of the International Playwrights Season in 2000, directed by Dominic Cooke

Pritchard told The Stage: “It describes a split between a generation of parents and a generation of children. That feels more relevant than ever now. The fact that it asks this really bold question about what happens if one generation rejects the world they’ve inherited, seemed to me to be a question that a lot of people who are around my age are asking at the moment.”

Pritchard trained as a director at Birkbeck College, University of London. He was the new writing associate at the Royal Exchange Theatre, Manchester between 2010 and 2011. The JMK Young Director Award has been presented annually since 1998 and this year is its 15th anniversary. Applicants for the award must be under 30, have directed no more than two professional productions and must apply to direct a ‘classic text’.

Previous winners include Thea Sharrock, Orla O’Loughlin, Bijan Sheibani, the Young Vic’s deputy artistic director Joe Hill-Gibbins, Mark Rosenblatt, Natalie Abrahami, Polly Findlay and Cathal Cleary in 2011.
