Welsh actor Philip Madoc dies

Michael Quinn
,

Actor Philip Madoc has died at the age of 77.

Born in Merthyr Tydfil, he graduated from universities in Wales and Vienna as an interpreter before training at RADA. He made his television debut in 1961 and quickly specialised in playing villains, gaining attention as an SS officer in the 1969 World War II serial Manhunt (later returning to Nazi uniform as a captured U-boat commander in a classic episode of Dad’s Army), and as Magua in a BBC adaptation of The Last of the Mohicans in 1971.

He became a household name in 1981 when he took the title role in The Life and Times of David Lloyd George.

On stage, he enjoyed fruitful relationships with Theatr Clwyd and Theatre Wales, played the Duke in Measure for Measure and took the male lead in The Blue Angel (transferring with it to the West End) both for Trevor Nunn at the Royal Shakespeare Company, and maintained a regular presence in regional theatres throughout the UK.

He died this morning after a short illness in hospital in Hertfordshire.

A full obituary will follow in a future edition of The Stage.
