David Bowie representative says songs were not licensed for new musical

David Bowie has denied that he has licensed his songs for a new musical, to run at the O2 next spring.

The production team behind Heroes the Musical announced that it would feature songs including Let’s Dance, the Man Who Sold the World and the Jean Genie. In a quote in a press release about the show, writer and producer Deep Singh said: “We could not really believe it when they gave us permission”.

However, a statement on Bowie’s official website reads: “Neither the David Bowie Organization, nor its co-publishers EMI Music and Chrysalis, has issued a license for this performance at the O2. There are no negotiations pending for a long running musical featuring the music of Mr. Bowie.”

No one from the production was available for comment when The Stage went to press.
