NTW second season to feature Wikileaks play

National Theatre Wales has announced its second year of productions, including a new play about Bradley Manning – the US soldier who passed on state secrets to Wikileaks.

The Radicalisation of Bradley Manning is billed as a “reimagining of the teenage years in west Wales of the young American” and is being written by Tim Price. It will be directed by NTW artistic director John McGrath.

Peter Gill will stage Chekhov’s A Provincial Life, Frantic Assembly will return to its home-town of Swansea to create a show inspired by Dylan Thomas’ Just Like Little Dogs and NTW will also tour new musical The Village Social, by Dafydd James and Ben Lewis, to village halls across Wales.

Meanwhile, NTW will also take its work beyond Wales for the first time with The Dark Philosophers, created with Told by an Idiot, taking part in this year’s Edinburgh Festival Fringe, and the company is also creating a series of works that will be staged as part of the London 2012 Cultural Olympiad – including a production of Corolianus, produced for the Royal Shakespeare Company’s World Shakespeare Festival, which will be staged in Dragon Film Studios near Bridgend.

Artistic director John McGrath and executive producer Lucy Davies said in a statement: “After a wonderfully rich and fulfilling launch year, we are truly excited to be announcing our second year’s programme. We’ll be travelling across Wales, and also stepping beyond the borders to Edinburgh. As well as our signature large-scale site-specific work, we’ll be touring into village halls, exploring digital space, and celebrating some great Welsh artists. It’s going to be another extraordinary adventure.”
