Les Gray was the lead singer with the glam rock seventies band Mud. The band, formed in 1966, had 15 hit singles including three No1s – Tiger Feet, Lonely This Christmas and Oh Boy.

Born in Mitcham, Surrey on April 9, 1946 Gray began playing music in the local school band. When he left school he wrote commercials for the Pearl and Dean advertising agency and formed Mud with drummer Dave Mount. They made their first appearance at Streatham Ice Rink.

With Ray Stiles on bass and Rob Davis on guitar they turned professional in 1968 and made their TV debut on the Basil Brush Show. As their popularity grew they toured the UK often on bills with the singer Jack Jones.

Producer Mickie Most signed the band to his RAK label in 1973 and a string of hits followed, making them one of Britain’s most successful groups ever. Most introduced them to the songwriting duo of Nicky Chinn and Mike Chapman, who wrote Tiger Feet for them in 1974.

Mud eventually broke up in 1977 and Gray went onto form Les Gray’s Mud with new musicians. He toured for many years and recorded several solo singles, although he never recaptured the chart success of his earlier career.

Gray resided in Portugal for the past twelve years. Recently he was diagnosed with throat cancer which robbed him of his singing voice. He had planned to fly to Glasgow a week before his death for a charity show with Bay City Roller Les McKeown and singer Alvin Stardust but suffered two heart attacks and died on February 21, aged 57.

Widow Carol said: “People liked Les because he was so down to earth. He loved performing.”
