CBS Television Network and the American Theatre Wing have agreed to a six-year extension of their partnership to broadcast the Tony Awards until 2010. The previous agreement was set to expire after this year’s broadcast in June.

Named in honour of the late Antoinette Perry, the Tony Awards honour excellence in Broadway Theatreand were founded by the Theatre Wing in 1947. The annual awards show is presented by both the Wing and the League of American Theatres and Producers, the national trade organisation of the industry. CBS has televised the Tonys since 1978.

Traditionally one of the lowest-rated of all award shows, the Tonys nevertheless remain a prestige event, one which CBS was eager to keep on its schedule. The new agreement gives CBS the right to air the Tonys as a three-hour broadcast, something it did for the first time last year. Previously the Tonys were two hours long on CBS, with an additional hour airing – prior to the network transmission – on local Public Broadcasting Stations around the country.

The 58th Annual Tony Awards will be broadcast live from the stage of Radio City Music Hall on Sunday, June 6. In order to be eligible for this year’s awards, a show must open on Broadway no later than May 5. Nominations for the 2004 Tonys will be announced on May 10.
